Turkish Kilim Rugs

Turkish kilim rugs have steadily increased their demand in various parts of the world. They are more like tapestries that are mainly used as floor coverings, sofa covers and sometimes as wall hangings as well. Rug store has an enviable collection of Turkish kilim rugs that is sure to enchant you.

They are hand woven and made with great care and hence are very well known and loved in many parts of the world. Cultural, environmental, religious, socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions led to the production of kilim rugs in ancient Turkey. Various ethnic and tribal groups in central Asia and Turkey got involved in rug making during that time. This tradition has continued and Turkish kilim rugs are now among the very best. They probably have their origin from the nomadic Turkic people of the medieval Seljuk period. They were manufactured in large quantities for the court and for export. Turkish rugs, kilims and carpets are produced in extensive varieties and have their roots in various regions of Anatolia. So, they are also called Anatolian. These kilims, rugs and carpets can be differentiated by their method of manufacturing, symbolization, materials used in their making, designs and patterns, cultural and geographical inclinations and their intended use. Now most women and girls take up kilim weaving as a good means of earning money and therefore account for the bulk of artisans and weavers.

Kilims and carpets from the small coastal town of Hereke are basically known for their fine weaving. Yarn made from fine wool, cotton or silk and sometimes even gold and silver were utilized in their production. They are now amongst the highest echelons of quality and value.

Common tools used for making Turkish kilim or Anatolian kilims and carpets are- design plates, horizontal looms, vertical looms, floor looms, knives, scissors, hooks, combs and spindles. Most Anatolian rugs use the double-knot also called Turkish Knot. Each and every knot is secured on two warps. This ensures that the pile thread is tightly enclosed around two warps that ultimately result in a stronger and more intricately designed rug.

Hand woven Turkish kilim rugs exclusively use fabric derived from nature. Wool, cotton and silk are the main materials used. Wool is most preferred material for pile in hand woven rugs because it is durable, easy to work on, soft and available easily. Wool can be found in various colors like white, yellow, grey, fawn and brown. Wool is used both in its natural state and also after dyeing. Cotton is mostly used as the foundation in rugs. There are three types of weaving techniques. They are:

  • Wool on wool: Here pile, warp and weft all are made of wool. Wool pile on waft and warp are also made from wool. It is the most traditional and classical method of rug manufacturing and also the most genuine. This is the oldest type of weaving. It uses more time-honored design patterns than its fellow rugs. Classical geometrical designs and not much complex patters are a hallmark of such rugs.
  • Wool on cotton: Wool pile on cotton warp and weft is also a popular form of weaving. This specific amalgamation facilitates more sophisticated design patterns than the traditional wool on wool. As cotton can be spun more finely than wool, it allows a higher knot count. These rugs have floral designs and various flourishes while having the traditional geometric patterns.

Silk on silk: Silk pile on silk warp and weft is yet another type of weaving done in Anatolian rugs and carpets. This type of weaving provides the opportunity of weaving the most complex and intricate designs and patterns. The knot count is highest in this method. These rugs and carpets, whose intricacies are world famous, are generally not much larger than 3 x 3 meters.
