Turkish Rugs

History

The production of Turkish rugs started in the medieval Seljuk period. Myriad socioeconomic, environmental, religious, cultural and sociopolitical reasons were the precursor of this heritage. Earlier rugs were made entirely for household use, but their brilliance made them famous and rugs began to be produced in large quantities for court and export. The rugs have their origin from various regions of Anatolia and so are also called Anatolian. Rugs of different regions have different symbols, designs and patterns. In modern days, rugs are both machine made and hand woven. Women and girls make up huge majority of rug weavers.

Technique

Wool is the material of choice when it comes to rug making. Cotton and silk are also used in many rugs. Vertical and horizontal looms and also machines are used for rug making. Turkish rugs employ symmetrical double loop knotting system. Each knot is bound on two warps. This ensures the pile thread is bound securely with two warps which lead to stronger and more elaborately designed rug. Wool pile on wool weft and warp is the most popular method of weaving. Wool pile on cotton warp and weft and silk pile on silk warp and weft are also done in large numbers.
